Installation Instructions

Installation Wizard

The installer is a wizard with the exception of a step where the user is prompted to select the folder containing their Femap installation. This is required because some of the files are placed in Femap's api folder. Select the root folder, which contains the folder named 'api'.


Finish Installation in Femap

After completing the installation with the Wizard, open Femap. The interface is made available in the Custom Tools toolbar. This may not be visible, but can be shown by going to the Tools menu and selecting it from the list under Toolbars.


To complete the installation, run the custom tool [CalculiX]->[Admin Tools]->[Include In Menus]. This will add the tool to the Femap "File" menu under the "Import" submenu. The custom tool [CalculiX]->[Admin Tools]->[Remove From Menus] undoes this change. Be sure to undo the menu changes before uninstalling the bConverged Femap Interface (you will be reminded during the uninstall process).


The interface is licensed with a key. To request a key, navigate to the custom tool [CalculiX]->[Admin Tools]->[Set License Key]. You will be prompted for a license key with the dialog shown below. The key is based on a unique identifier for the computer on which it is running. Either select the unique ID and email it to info@bConverged.com or select the Send ID button. The Send ID button will format an email for you, but it must be sent manually. Convergent Mechanical's software will not transmit any data from your computer.

Once we have recieved your unique ID, we will generate and email you the key to unlock the software. Enter the key in the text box and select the Validate button. This process will not need to be repeated unless the license is for demonstration. In which case, you will be prompted for a new key when the license expires.


Once the key is installed you will be ready to use the interface from either the Femap menu or the custom tools toolbar.

Test Installation

Samples were installed as part of the installation. These are placed in the folder:
C:\Program Files\bConverged\common\sampleData\frd
If you have installed other bConverged products, you will have other sample data. If the Femap Interface is the only product installed, then the sample data folder will only contain FRD data.



It is recommended that you copy these to a working folder to work with.


To open a CalculiX results fine in Femap, select the menu option [File]->[Import]->[CalculiX Results].


You will be prompted to select the CalculiX results file you would like to load.


If this is the first time running the bConverged Femap Interface, you will be prompted for a license key with the dialog shown below. The CalculiX results file will be processed and a Femap netural file will be generated. A description of the results will be shown. If you have just entered your license key, Femap has lost track of the process and will not automatically load the newly generated data. You can either import the neutral file, or select the [CalculiX]->[Load CalculiX Results] again.


If the sample data translated was the plateWithHole_main.frd file, then the following mesh will be shown.


To browse the results, select the toolbar icon with the image of curly brackets {}. Select the SXX data for the contour plot and then click on the OK button.


To plot the contour, select the toolbar button with the icon showing a smooth contour plot. The mouse wheel will control zooming. The image below is a zoomed in view of the stress around the hole.
